Government A study of government usually brings a collective "UGH" from most
upper level high school students. They've had many civics lessons since elementary
grades, and they are sure they know enough to function in society or at least know
where they can find a book to look up the facts necessary to answer a question.
Yet too few have understood the necessity of government. They assume government,
especially a democratic one, has always existed and always will. Why we have a
government that holds us together yet doesn't crush us is taken for granted. This
unit helps students understand the philosophy of politics and government. It is a
good introductory unit to the study of government for any grade level.

For A Day Students get to go through an online process to see what our
President does and what's expected of him. They fill out an online survey to see
what it's like being "President For A Day."

Find Procedure: Go to www.whitehouse.gov, click on whitehouse tours and
history. Next, go to Presidents of the United States. Click on each president
starting with Washington. Each presidential page starts off with a "fast fact.
" Copy down each fast fact in your notes, make sure your spelling and data are
correct. After you have all your data, go to www.Puzzlemaker.com to create a
puzzle using the facts you found. Click on "Criss-Cross" puzzle to create
your puzzle. Make you puzzle 50x50 and the cell size 30. To begin making your
puzzle, type in the President's last name, hit the space bar and then put in
your clue. Make sure you don't put the president's name in the clue. When you
are finished, print out a copy of your puzzle. Share your puzzle with another
member of the class.

- U.S. Flag
Facts and Discussion Questions Flag Burning In 1984, at the Republican
National Convention in Texas, Gregory Johnson burned a U.S. flag to protest
various policies of the Reagan Administration. While his burning of the flag was
not physically threatening to anyone, it vexed many bystanders. After a lengthy
process, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that flag burning was protected by the
First Amendment as freedom of expression. In response to this decision, federal
lawmakers tried to pass a constitutional amendment banning flag burning. As of
this date (May 2000) no anti-flag burning legislation has passed at the federal
level. Johnson's lawyers stated, "If there is a bedrock principle underlying the
first Amendment, it is that the government may not prohibit the expression of an
idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or
disagreeable."

Microsoft Excel Have the students work in pairs Tell them that they will need
to develop at least one line graph and a pie chart, which they will need to

clearly their graphs/charts display the information to their audience. They can

3-D drawing of their house. 6)Write a "fake" constitution and create you own class

- Presidents of the
United States 1. Students will use the Internet to gather data about the
presidents of the United States. The database will have the following fields: full
name, birthplace, native state, term-years, political party, wife, and historical
events during the presidency. 2. Students will use the Internet to create a
trading card about one of the presidents of the United States using a draw
program. The card will have the following information: name, picture of the person
copied from an Internet site, birth, famous for, short biographical
information.

Business Begin the first lesson by explaining Spreadsheets to the students.
Explain how spreadsheets work and how to create a spreasheet. Explain how to write
formulas and how to enter the information on the spreadsheet. The students are
then assigned to imagine that they are the owner of a store. They need to
determine twenty items that they would sell. The students need to record the
amount of each item they sold for a two week period. The students then create a
spreadsheet with the information. Once the information is entered. Explain how
stores price their items. The students then need to add their prices and profit on
the the spreadsheet.

Problems Students should realize that they are using the computer as a tool to
solve problems. The Internet and other computer applications should be introduced
and discussed. The teacher should train students on appropriate Internet use as
well as how to set up databases and spreadsheets. Teacher and students should
review objectives and problems. Students may fill out a Think Sheet that will
direct their thinking prior to beginning the lesson. A Think Sheet may help
students review information or assist them in making a plan for solving the
problems. As the teacher, you may wish to provide Internet sites prior to student

- Banking and its Importance This is a lesson that is
intended to be used as a method of teaching basic banking principles. Rather than
a dry textbook lesson, this lesson (which is probably best done orally, but can be

Geography Cooperative Group Activity After an introduction to the five themes
of geography, divide the class into five cooperative groups. Allow each group to
choose one of the five themes of geography. After all the themes of geography have
been selected. Hand out copies of old magazines to each group. Instruct the group
that they are to search through the magazines for pictures that depict their theme
of geography. After selecting the pictures for their theme, they are to glue the
pictures to the posterboard and make a collage. They are to write their theme at
the top of the posterboard. After all groups have finished their theme posters, a
spokesperson is selected from each group. Each cooperative group will take turns
having their spokesperson present their group's poster to the rest of the class,
explaining why they chose the pictures that are on their poster and how the
pictures relate to their theme.

- Colony Brochure
This lesson was done in conjunction with the computer class. After studying the 13
colonies, students were to create a brochure advertising one of the colonies. The
purpose of the brochure, they were told, would be to urge people in Europe to come
to America and settle in their particular colony. They worked in groups of 2-3 and
each group was assigned a different colony. The brochure had to include a map,
famous people of the colony, reasons why people would want to settle there --
opportunities available for jobs, land, religious freedom, etc; cities settled,
dates of founding and settlement. After the research was done and the brochure
planned and designed, the project was completed in computer class using Pagemaker.
Brochures were printed on an 8 1/2" x 11" paper and most used a trifold design.
(The computere teacher and I brought in some sample travel brochures) Pictures
were scanned in. After the projects were completed, students gave an oral report
and passed their brochures around to their classmates. It was a very good
cross-curricular project that I used with my 7th grade class.

- Creating a Colony
For this activity, begin after you have introduced the basic ideas of the Thriteen
Original Colonies. After you have discussed several new colonies, assign the
students this project to be done in correlation with the Unit. ASsign students to
groups of 3 or 4. Present a criteria sheet containing the following assignments:
Colony charter, rules, flag, manufactured product, a map showing their journey,
and a diary of the trip. have members assign parts to be done within the group.
Assist the class each day with one of the assigned parts. Have students prepare
for turning a section of the room into a colony. When the work is finished, allow
students a day in class to set up their own colonies.The students will learn group
cooperation as well as experiencing how it felt to be a colonist. If room permits,
allow students to keep displays up and allow them to work in them for a while.
It's amazing how they like having their own place to study!
