• Arctic Circle Information The Arctic Circle is also the name given the region around the North Pole. It includes the Arctic Ocean, thousands of islands, and the northern parts of Europe, Asia, and North America, including the Arctic and Subarctic regions of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Scandinavia, Siberia and the Russian Far East. A region of immense beauty far removed from the industrial areas of the world, it is also rich in mineral and other natural resources. Throughout this immense area, economic developers search for oil, gas, and similar marketable natural resources.
• Arctic Circle Map The Arctic Circle, as outlined on the map in orange, is the polar region of the Northern Hemisphere surrounding the North Pole. The map represents a global view at 90¡ N 0¡ to the planet clearly displaying the seven countries included in the region; Canada, Finland, Greenland, Norway, Sweden, Russia and the United States of America. The North American section in Alaska is currently under threat of oil exploitation by the current administration of the United States Government.
• Arctic: Land of the Midnight Sun The Arctic Circle marks the southern limit of the area where the sun does not rise on the winter solstice or set on the summer solstice. Continuous day or night ranges from one day at the Arctic Circle to six months at the North Pole. The imaginary line of the Arctic Circle extends in an arc across the upper third of Alaska, at approximately 66 degrees 33' north of the equator. This is the latitude at which both summer and winter solstices occur. "Solstice" means the point at which the sun is at its greatest distance from the equator. In the summer, this occurs on June 20 or 21, making that the longest day of the year.
