Chinese Rugs

Rug Number: C268
Size: 26 inches x 47 inches.
Description: Old Bautou rug with a central window into a landscape scene - mountains, water, trees and little houses in the background. The focus is on a gentleman and his son crossing the bridge. Two additional pairs of small 'windows' in the corners show three of the 'Four Gentlemanly Accomplishments" - books, painting, chess. The allegory is 'passing knowledge to the next generation'. (I'll put the whole story on the certificate of authenticity that comes with this rug.) Light blue border strip with endless knots in the corners. This is a classical piece in fair condition, with areas of brown pile tip discoloration in parts of the light blue areas, several well-executed patches, and new wefts added to prevent further pile damage. The pile is very fine soft wool, and the handle is floppy. 80-line (80 pairs of warp threads per foot). Rugs like this in better condition are museum pieces, and command impressively high prices. Here is your chance to own a genuine Bautou rug with a good story at a very reasonable cost. Country of origin: China.
Price: US$225.00 plus shipping and insurance.
Rug Number: C88
Size: 38 inches x 20-1/2 inches.
Description: Old Baotou rug with some abrash across the width of the blue field, visible in the photo. Geometric floral medallion. In the dark blue field, peonies, Tibetan 'endless knots', fret corners. 'Wishes fulfilled' inner border showing Mongolian influence, with Chinese 'endless knots' in the corners. Scrolled outer border of Taoist symbols (clockwise from lower left: flower basket, castanets, fan, sword, gourd, tube, lotus flower, flute) with floral corners. This rug is clean and in excellent condition. 60 line (60 pairs of cotton warp threads per foot), double wefts. The pile is short and even, the handle is "floppy". There are no dye runs. This rug shows a well-composed assortment of classical Chinese, Mongolian, and Tibetan motifs, indicative of the rug trade crossing geographical and cultural borders in this part of the world. The price reflects the use of synthetic dyes. Country of origin: China.
Price: US$175.00 plus shipping and insurance.
Rug Number: C168
Size: 26 inches x 48 inches.
Description: Old Suiyuan rug with the 'Four Gentlemanly Accomplishments" - books, painting, music, chess - with lotus flowers in the field around a central medallion, with running thunderline inner border, and wanfret outer border. This rug is clean and in excellent condition. The pile is very fine soft wool, the handle is floppy. The pile shows signs of tip fading and abrash that make it unlikely that the rug is a fake, and there are no stains or repairs. 80-line (80 pairs of warp threads per foot). Rugs like this are hard to find, and this one is a beautiful example. I offer long odds that you won't get a better price even if you go to Beijing yourself. Country of origin: China.

Rug Number: C110
Size: 50 inches x 24 inches.
Description: Old Baotou double mat with "double dorje" and flowers center medallions, with lotus flowers in the corners. Multicolored 'stupa' inner border and three-dimensional thunderline outer border, nicely set off with thin white lines and finished with a dark blue outer band. This rug is clean and is in excellent condition. The seller described this rug as "a late 19th century Baotou rug", which is certainly a possibility, but tough to prove. Fading of the pile colors at the tips is consistent with the claimed age. Careful examination of the tan wool pile in the field around the center medallion reveals that two colors were used to produce a now-faded vajra motif, visible in the photo. 75-line (75 pairs of warp threads per foot). The pile is coarse wool, the handle is "chunky". The colors have aged beautifully, and there are no dye runs. Mats like this are hard to find, and this one is a beautiful example of graceful aging. Country of origin: China.

Rug Number: C188
Size: 36 x 19 inches
Description: This little rug, with peony medallion and peonies in the field and corners, pearl inner border, and classical zigzag outer border, is in very good condition. The fine silky texture of the wool pile, and the well-aged blue and salmon colors, combine to make this rug a special piece. The Chinese seller described this rug as a late 19th century Baotou rug, and I find nothing in the construction and materials of this rug that contradicts the claim. 80-line (80 pairs of warp threads per foot). The pile is short to medium length, the handle is "floppy", and there are no dye runs. There is some wear (lengthwise along the centerline of the field) and slight discoloration on this rug from normal use (sitting or sleeping on it), and a small, professional repair of the weft at the center medallion. Very fine cotton warp and double weft. Country of origin: China.
SOLD
Rug Number: C128
Size: 48 inches x 22 inches.
Description: Old Baotou double mat with classical lotus flower center medallions and fretwork corners on a natural tan sheep's wool field. 'Pearls' inner border and zigzag outer border, nicely framed with light blue and dark blue lines and finished with a grey outer band. The previous owner in Beijing described this rug as "a late 19th century Baotou rug". More likely "first quarter 20th century". This rug is clean and is in excellent condition. 75-line (75 pairs of warp threads per foot). The pile is soft wool, the handle is "chunky". The color palette is very good, and there are no dye runs. Country of origin: China
