The 2003 10th Annual Duke City Aerobatic Classic was held on June 7th and 8th in Albuquerque, New Mexico and attracted the largest number of contestants in the history of the event - we started with 28 pilots from the local area and surrounding states.  The contest was sponsored by the Albuquerque Aerobatics Club with Jeramy Melton serving as the CD and Master of Ceremonies.

Jeramy ran a very tight contest and competition began sharply at 8:00 AM on Saturday morning with contestants in all 5 classes – 11 Basic, 9 Sportsman, 3 Intermediate, 2 Advanced, and 3 Unlimited.  Team Rebel from San Antonio, Texas came to town and they were looking to take home some top honors.

Saturday morning was clear and warm with slight breezes which were pretty good conditions for flying in Albuquerque at this time of year but progressively got tougher by the afternoon with a Density Altitude of around 8500 feet, thermals everywhere, patches of clouds, and a windsock that flew horizontally and changed directions every few minutes.  Everyone got to fly two rounds of the known sequence on Saturday with a lunch break consisting of a heapin' helpin' of finger lickin' BBQ from the Quarter's restaurant which was generously sponsored by Kubiak & Associates LLC, a local CPA firm.  It was very tough to get the pilots and judges motivated to fly after lunch with their stomachs full but we managed to wake some of them up from their siestas to complete the second round before the typical gale-force winds hit in the afternoon.

Going into the Unknown Sequences on Sunday morning, there was a very close race in the Intermediate and Unlimited classes with a mere few hundred normalized points separating the "Top Dawgs" of each class.  The morning was cool and breezy and the Intermediate pilots had to warm up their fingers to fly their Unknown Sequence. The judges asked the pilots if their knees shaking had to do with the temperature or the unknown sequence itself.  Advanced, Unlimited, and Sportsman Classes followed with their unknown sequences and everyone completed without mishap.  In fact, during the 2-day event there were a few minor incidences but no pilot totally lost their plane.  The Unlimited pilots and the crowd were treated with a special surprise - their unknown was straight from the JR Challenge.  Basic pilots also got to fly their sequence once in lieu of an unknown just to keep the total number of flights equal. In total, every pilot got to fly at least three full rounds of their Known Sequence and 1 Unknown Sequence.  The wind picked up again in the afternoon but that did not stop the Free Style event.  Daniel Rathbun put up quite a show for the crowd with with his 40% Carden CAP doing rolling circles, harriers, and torque rolls just a few feet off the deck.  Clint Duewall showed that he had rhythm by synchronizing his maneuvers to the beat of the music.  He also threw in some low point rolls, tumbles and spins which are always crowd pleasers.  Sean Guthrie closed the contest by showing the crowd that you don't have to be a veteran or even need a great big plane to do 3D.  Sean demonstrated that he will be a force to contend with in the future with his point rolls, hovers, and spins in his U-Can-Do 3D.

In all, the contest ran very smoothly and everyone had a good time.  We would like to thank all of the pilots who made the contest a big success - especially the out-of-towners who drove many hours over long distances to get here.  Also, special thanks to our sponsors for their generous contributions of awards and prizes, Jeramy Melton our Contest Director, our judges and scribes who braved the cold, heat, and wind both days, our consessioneers the ladies of Bethel #4 Job’s Daughters, Rick Fortenbury and Fred Pennington who did a lot of work and coordination to put the event together, the Albuquerque Radio Control Club for the use of their PA system and helping out both days, Systems by SON for providing the PC and technical support, Team JR for being present just in case anyone needed assistance, and all of the pilots who helped to make the contest a big success.  We are currently discussing whether we will hold another contest in October so stay tuned!
