| Haunted Sites of Delaware |
Here ya go, Delaware! These are all the sites I've been
able to find so far. Happy ghost hunting!
Bethany Beach
Addy-Sea Inn - Buitl by Mr. John Addy
around 1906. Room 1 contains a bath tub that has been seen shaking violently.
Room 6 has organ music heard within its walls. Room 11 is thought to be haunted
by the ghost of Paul Dulaney, who worked for the Addys. Footsteps, thought
to be of Kurtz Addy, can be heard on the roof and in the second floor hallway.
Kurtz, the son of John Addy, fell to his death from the
roof.
Beach at Bethany-
The ghost of naval hero Eddie Rickenbacker
haunts this beach. His apparition is seen in tattered clothing and he appears
to be confused.
Bowers Beach
The Bowers Beach Boogies -There are reportedly
3 spirits that haunt this area. One haunts Lover's Lane just outside of town.
The second ghost haunts the downtown area. He is said to be a well dressed
man who seems depressed. Lastly, the ghost of a man who commited suicide
haunts the beach at Bowers. He apparently walked into the ocean and
drowned.
Cypress Swamp
Cypress Swamp Conservation
Area- Called Burnt Swamp by the locals, this area was the site of
a fire caused by an illegal alcohol still that was here in the 1930's. The
fire burned for over a year. The apparition of an old shingle-maker is said
to still haunt the edge of the swamp.
Dover
Dickinson Mansion -The ghost of lawyer
John Dickinson haunts his former home. Supposedly, he can still be heard
writing in the den.Recording have been made that turn up the sound af a quill
pen scratching away. Also, in the afternoon, the sheets are sometimes found
unmade in his old room where he would take afternoon naps. John Dickinson
is known for writing many essays supporting the American colonies.
The Blue Coat Inn -A helpful spirit or
two haunt this establishment, a young boy and an older man. The owners believe
they are the spirits of Revolutionary War Drummer Boy and his commander,
Colonel John Haslett.
Woodburn - Used as part of the Underground
Railroad by Danial Cowgill. In 1966, it became the Governor's mansion.
It is said that 3 men and 1 girl supposedly haunt this place. The first ghost
is described as an elderly man, though to be the original owner, Charles
Hillyard. He has been seen upstairs and by the fireplace. The secind ghost
has been described as having a taste for wine. His apparition has been seen
taking sipping wine in the dining room. A third ghost is believe to be that
of a slave kidnapper. He climbed the large Poplar tree in the yard, hoping
to kidnap runaway slaves. Instead, he slipped and caught his head inbetween
two sturdy limbs. His moans ans cries can be heard inside the mansion. The
last ghost is that of a little girl in a red gingham dress. Her apparition
has been seen playing by the pool and in the reception room. She has yet
to be identified.
Frederica
Mordington- The old mansion is reportedly
hautned by the ghost of a slave girl known only as "Tom's Daughter". According
to the story, she was locked away in the attic after refusing the questionable
advances of her owner. She leaped from the window to escape. Her screams
as she fell to her death can still be heard in the house.
Fort Delaware
Fort Delaware-Used in the Civil War as
a prisoner of war camp, Fort Delaware housed over 33,000 Confederates. It
was used in the coastal defense networks of WW 1 and 2. Since it's opening
to the public in 1951, visitors and employees have reported the sounds of
moaning and chains rattling in the dungeons of the fort. The apparitions
of confederate soldiers have been seen under the ramparts and in the parade
grounds.
Indian River Bay
Delaware Seashore State Park- The unidentified
ghost of a woman wearing an old-fashioned bathing suit has been seen here.
She walks over the sand dunes and occasionally asks witnesses for help. With
what, no one knows.
Lewes
Cannonball House- Named after the cannonball
in the front wall. It commemorates the cannonball that hit the house on April
6, 1813 fired from a British frigate during the War of 1812. The ghost of
an unidentified former owner is said to haunt the house. The poor woman
apparently go too close to the fireplace, caught her dress on fire and burned
to death.
New Castle
Amstel House - Built by Dr. John Finney,
this house is reportedly haunted by an unknown spirit that also haunts his
son's house just down the street. The two houses were connected by a secret
tunnel at one time.
David Finney Inn - The same unidentified
pressence reported at the Amstel House also haunts the 3rd floor of the David
Finney Inn. Windows are opened, and objects are moved about. It has also
been reported that dogs refuse to go up to the 3rd floor.
Kensey John Homestead- The apparition
of a young woman wearing a white, silk dress has been seen here. She was
first reported in the late 1800's when the ghost apparently attended a dinner
party, only to disappear later on that night.
Old Wooden Docks- The spirits of Dutch
soldiers have been reported near the boat docks here. A headless soldier
patrols the shoreline in front of the docks. The ghosts have been seen
during the autumn months.
Redden
Ellendale State Forest - A headless figure
has been seen walking along the highway that runs through the park. No one
knows who he is, but there is high rate of accidents reported along this
road by the local police
Redden State Forest- In a deserted section
of the forest lies a ranger's house reportedly haunted by a woman who died
within the house. Strange sounds and voices come from empty rooms upstairs.
Lights and other electrical appliances turn on and off by themselves. The
identity of the female spirit is unknown.
St. Georges
Old Scott Run Bridge- The spirit of an
old black man named Jacob is said to still play his fiddle by the new bridge.
Before the Civil War, Jacob was said to play his fiddle while he sat on the
railling of the old wooden bridge. His owner, for whatever stupid reason,
beat the man almost to death. No longer usefull as a slave, Jacob was able
to build a small shack next to the bridge. Unfortunately, he had also
lost his ability to play his fiddle. He died after falling into the Scott
Run stream. It is said that you can still hear his fiddle playing while standing
on the new bridge.
Slaughter Beach
Fort Saulsbury- Built in 1917 and used
in WW1 for defense and in WW2 as a POW camp, the fort was abandoned in 1946.
Today, the pressence of the prisoners can still be felt in the cell blocks.
Slaughter Neck- The ghost of a man who
commited suicide haunts this area. He apparently shot himself while sitting
in a ditch. Another ghost that wanders the Boardwalk trail between Slaughter
Neck and Broadkill Beach is thought to be that of Johnathan Morris. He owned
a farmhouse that onces stood near the trails. His spirit is most often felt
by his grave, which is located in the old Morris Family Graveyard.
Wilmington
Rockwood Mansion - Many orbs have been
witnessed floating throught the 45 rooms of this Victorian Mansion. Strange
sounds have been reported by staff members. Although investigations have
been done, none have been able to identify specific spirits.
