Only nearby license on this frequency is Portsmouth, RI FD…this would be the first area fire dept. to go digital (P25).

Methuen MA Fire has reportedly switched PL to 192.8 on 154.010 which seems very odd to me

Because they are almost certain to get blasted by Cranston, RI on same freq/PL!

03/06/2006 Some nomenclature changes on the air: Boston Fire is now actively using the incident command system. Units can be heard “establishing” and “terminating” command at all incidents. U.S Coast Guard Group Woods Hole has now joined the new lingo usage and is identifying themselves at “U.S. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England”

03/02/2006 Bristol County, MA new trunk lineup: 854.0625, 855.9875, 859.4875, 860.4875. They have also licensed 853.7625 and 856.3875

Mashpee PD new rebanding frequency will be 854..9375

12/27/2005 New Mass State Police licenses: 154.680, 154.9125 various areas central/western MA.

09/20/2005 Another website with good rebanding information is here.

Lynn FD regional dispatch is shifting channel assignments soon. Cities of Lynn, Swampscott and Nahant will all be dispatched on 154.415 74.4. Lynn fireground will be 153.800 71.9. Swampscott and Nahant fireground will be 154.370 107.2. Watch for all Metrofire district 13 departments not on UHF to make the move in the near future due to a grant that has been received.

09/08/2005 The on and off survivor airlift is back on 100 or so hurricane survivors have landed at Otis ANG Base. FD rescue ops have been heard on Ops 2 on the trunk (37968). ITAC-1 866.5125 156.7 is carrying what sounds like nurses checking medication supplies. ITAC-4 868.0125 156.7 is also active. Scancapecod reports activity on 867.275 91.5. More survivors are expected Friday-we’ll keep monitoring.

08/07/2005 Sandwich, MA FD has licensed 484.825…

07/29/2005 I’ve just received my Uniden 396D. Almost as small as a pack of cigarettes! In a matter of minutes I had loaded the MSP system. Locked out a few talkgroups and added a few others and I’m off and running. I used the SMA/BNC adaptor to use an antenna with better sensitivity than the stock duck. The adaptor fits nice and snug. Nice features! I can run wx standby in background. Close Call technology can run in the background and alert me to any nearby transmitters while still scanning the trunk. UPDATE 8/02/2005: I got the tone out feature to work on Ptown fire. You should go to Uniden’s site and download a firmware update into the radio that eliminates needing to set the times on the tones. FOLLOW DOWNLOAD DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY so as to not damage the radio! I’m starting new webpage with tone out frequencies for area departments but need your input…that information is hard to come by.

07/28/2005 Some answers from Uniden about what scanners will work after rebanding…check out their web site for details…

07/05/2005 Worcester has licensed 858.4375, 859.4875, 860.4375. A reader writes that these are not new and are used as conventional freqencies. Lincoln, MA Fire has licensed 470.850.

07/02/2005 We have received some new information on rebanding. The first phase should be happening fairly quickly and involves agencies now operating on 851.0125 to 853.9875 must move off them by the end of the year. To that end http://scancapecod.us is reporting Sandwich Police have been assigned 855.1125 and Bourne Police have been assigned 857.4125. Mashpee Police will be affected too. These are not active yet but stay tuned.

06/28/2005 800 Mhz rebanding: Its enough to give even veteran scanner monitorers like me a mygrain. There is much confusion about what is and what isn’t. Truth is much we don’t know so we just have to WAIT. The process is still about a year away and yes some older scanners may be rendered obsolete. Newer scanners may have to be flashed or sent back for upgrades. Basically public safety frequencies will be in the lower 850 mhz.                 While Nextel moves to the 860 range to reduce co-interference. Check here regularly as we will post specifics as we get them.

07/20/2003 Monitoring profile: The Changing Times of Dxing Public Safety:

Well after an endless winter and spring the summer season is

Here and I can finally get back to one of my favorite passions:

Dxing the public safety bands especially the VHF Hi and UHF.

Much has changed over the years. Truck systems have caused

Many favorites like Suffolk County, (LI) NY and Deleware SP,

Philadelphia and Baltimore police to disappear. But many

New towns and cities have moved into the vacated frequencies.

I have DX NC Highway Patrol hi band on 154.680 and Cape

Hatteras Coast Guard to the south. I have many hits in ME and

Canadian weather on 161.650 and 161.775 from Nova Scotia.

I have worked some DX as far away as NJ on 800 Mhz!

Of course the standard to see if conditions are right is FDNY.

The largest city still uses VHF hi frequencies although they have

Been reported to be switching to UHF digital

Noise is a problem, I mentioned the APCO 25 spray on VHF

453 Mhz is full of bleeps from various data systems

483-484 often has an annoying buzz I’m told is from some

taxi GPS like system…this comes in behind Boston Fire

F1 483.1625. You will generally find that

Conditions are best when the Bermuda High sets up shop

Offshore. Also if warm air is coming up over cooler air at the

Surface-often accompanied by fog. Interestingly enough I find

Some of my longest southern hits occur when a hurricane nears

Cape Hatteras! So the next time you hear a strange station

Maybe with a southern drawl give it a listen. If possible use a

Scanner with a PL decoder. Between the PL and Geographic

Locations over the air it should be pretty easy to figure out who

You are hearing. If you are stumped send me the frequency with

PL and I’ll check it against my massive list.

05/27/2003 Amtrak has licensed a 900 trunk system for South Station:

                   935.8875, 935.9375, 935.9875, 936.8875, 936.9375, 936.9875

05/10/2003  Monitoring profile: the spread of APCO-25 in NH

I managed to take probably the last day off before summer for

a quick overnight to New Hampshire. State Police have been

                    APCO-25 for sometime: 151.400 Troop A, 154.935 Troop B

                    154.665 Troop C, 156.210 Troop D, 151,325 Troop E

and 152.630 Troop F. Many counties are now also using

                     APCO-25. 154.860 Carroll, 154.770 Grafton (some analog),

                     155.520 Hillsboro, 155.685 Merrimack, 154.815 Rockingham,

and 154.725 Stratford. Some locals are also using APCO-25:

Concord 155.625, Londonderry 155.865  and to my amazement

Conway on 155.640 (Some analog). NH seems to be leading the

way with VHF digital and reportedly plans to VHF trunk in the

future. In Mass North Attleboro PD use 470.8875 and in RI

West Warwick PD uses 154.785. Connecticut State Police

has New England’s only APCO-25 800 trunk system so far.

Oops its reported Nashua NH is operating an 800 APCO trunk!

04/21/2003  Boston Muncipal Police have licensed 867.7875 using

digital voice. Interesting thing is BMP left the 800 trunk

complaining about dead spots for their old 453.3 freq…….

04/20/2003  North Smithfield RI PD using new repeater 154.965 186.2

04/07/2003 Two interesting things in the FCC run for the week:

The Prudential Tower in Boston has licensed a bunch of

new frequencies for security. The interesting thing is that
