Cataloging Presentation for the 2001 COLT Conference
These pages were created for the 2001 Conference of the Council on Library/Media Technicians (COLT). I hope you find these pages both interesting and informative.
I've collected some of my favorite websites dealing with cataloging issues.
I can vouch for the accuracy of the LC web pages only. However, I included only those
pages that I felt were authoritative and up-to-date.
The LC Cataloging Directorate underwent a major reorganization in 1992,
merging descriptive cataloging, subject cataloging, and shelflisting functions into
over 40 different cataloging teams. It's been 9 years now, and I can't say whether
the reorganization was a good thing or bad ... but it sure has been different!
From 1991 through 1997, the LC Cataloging Directorate was a prime example
of "doing more with less." In 1997 we began planning for the implementation of a new
integrated library system (Voyager, from Endeavor
Information Systems, Inc.), in 1998 more staff were pulled from cataloging duties
to assist in the planning, and we implemented the LC ILS in 1999.
